How Long Does Weed Stay Good For?

So you’ve found some old bud stashed away in your sock drawer. When you finally get around to smoking it, you might notice that it just doesn’t give you the buzz you’re looking for—you might even find that it does nothing at all!

That’s the grim reality of cannabis that’s past its prime: crisp, crackly, dry as the desert, improperly stored and gone away to that big ol’ head shop in the sky.

We want to help you avoid this situation as much as possible. So how long does weed last, and how can you maximize the quality?

Making Your Weed Last Longer

Storage is key when it comes to keeping your weed buzzy and beautiful. We’re talking about a better spot for keeping your cannabis than the bottom of a backpack or a ziplock baggy stuffed between the couch cushions. If you want your weed (and your money!) to last longer, you need to up your storage game.

First, we need to stop weed from getting anywhere close to its natural enemies—sunlight and damp. Heat will dry out your bud and degrade the THC within. And let’s be honest, no one is eager to smoke weed that’s gotten wet.

Find a good spot for your stash away from the elements. Where you decide to put your bud matters: don’t leave near a window, susceptible to sun, temperature changes, and humidity! You want the environment to be cool, dry and a consistent temperature throughout storage. For that same reason, you don’t want your weed in a non-airtight container. For maximum quality, we’d recommend a container made for storing cannabis, like an airtight stash bag or a ceramic or opaque glass storage jar, and storing it in a kitchen or living room cabinet!

How Long Can You Keep Weed For?

If kept properly and treated with tender love and care, weed can last anywhere from six months to a year. But like all good things, even weed with incredible amounts of THC will eventually wither away if left sitting for too long. After four years, it’s likely that even properly stored cannabis will have zero effect on you.

The best way to make sure your weed and pre-rolls don’t dry out, though, is our favourite trick: just to smoke ’em if you got ’em!
